On June 22nd and 23rd I did a quick backpacking trip up Deception Creek. It wasn’t terribly far, only 11 miles total, but it’s a nice hike along a beautiful little stream with plenty of interesting waterfalls and other water features and a nice campsite right before you have to cross the river, which is where I stopped.
The Deception Creek trailhead is at the very base of Stevens Pass, right before you start up the last steep stretch before the ski area. There is also parking and a scenic area for Deception Falls, which perhaps somewhat oddly I’ve never bothered to take a look at. It’s supposed to be a very nice waterfall so I’ll have to check it out someday.
Pictures do the trail more justice than words but I’ll just say the trail is in decent shape with only a couple large blowdowns farther up the trail. Also, I have stayed at this particular campsite before so I knew right where I was going. When I got to camp I found that someone had completely covered the area with a pile of branches. It appeared there had been some sort of fire but the branches didn’t seem associated with that. Most of them had obviously been cut and stacked in the center of the clearing, right where you would pitch a tent. I don’t get why anyone would do that but I spent half an hour clearing everything away and getting the site back to where it was livable.
The only other thing of note is that it’s been nice weather here but for some reason that is translating to thunderstorms every afternoon in the mountains. That’s not something we normally have to deal with but I’ve gotten rained on almost every afternoon and this trip was no different. It started raining about 2pm and rained on me steadily for about 3 hours, just enough to force me to have to dry all my gear out. Other than that it was great weather.
