Who is Avey Tare and what kind of music does he play? Well, he’s one of the members of a group called “Animal Collective”, who have been together since the early 2000’s, and the style of music is “experimental pop”. Neither of those probably tell you much about Avey Tare unless you already happen to be a fan. To me experimental pop could mean almost anything. At it’s core though, at least in the case of Avey, the music is synthesizer based used sampling of recorded natural sounds looped, sped up, slowed down, played backwards, etc… Overlay some vocals and a guitar or two over the top and you’ve got yourself some music.

I was curious how Avey could play this music in an engaging way. To me it’s one thing to play a guitar or sing and from the audience perspective we can see the artist creating music in front of us and we’re a part of that creation experience. When the music is created mainly with a synthesizer though and all the sounds are pre-recorded, it seems to me that it would be more difficult to create a show that engages the audience. Effectively you could just push a button and call it a day. In the end Avey kind of did both. The main tracks were pre-recorded (although I’m sure the artist would argue there’s much more to it than that) but Avey played guitar and sang on all the songs and that overlaid on top of the recorded tracks provided the artist/audience interaction. So, an interesting experience but probably not a musical style I’ll make a permanent part of my listening.
